What is it? Honda flirted with electric vehicles a decade ago, but decided the time wasn’t right. Now, apparently, Honda thinks it is. Using the Fit compact car platform, Honda has put together a concept that “strongly suggests” a production version due in 2012.
What makes it tick? A high-density coaxial motor derived from Honda’s FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, with a lithium-ion battery pack. Honda says the combination should be good for 70 to 100 miles a charge; it will recharge in 12 hours from a 120-volt outlet and less than six hours with a 240.
How much, how soon? No word on price, but a production version is due on the market in Japan and the United States in 2012. No plans for a version for Europe, where the Fit Hybrid was just introduced.
